Introduction to cone 6 glazes - oxidation

September 19th - October 10th ( 4 sessions)

This workshop covers the fundamentals of oxidation cone 6 glazes:

1-Health and Safety. 

2-Using the equipment for measuring and mixing (3-beam scale, sieves, drill etc.)

3-Understanding the components of a glaze  (glass forming materials, opacifiers, fluxes)

4-Colorants (oxides, carbonates, stains)

5-Fine tuning a glaze

6-The importance of record taking/ labeling

The price includes free firing of 5 test tiles and 500 grams of glaze material.
 

Gustav Hamilton’s sculptures and paintings exist as auto-fictitious objects where real-life events merge with fictional narrative. In this space of total authorship, family heirlooms have as much relevance as his hopes and dreams about imagined encounters in the art world. Gustav currently teaches at the 92nd Street Y where he is also the Ceramic Technician. Prior to moving to New York City, he was a visiting professor at Colorado State University. He received a BFA from the University of Montana and an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Mold Making/Slip Casting WorkShop

July 8, July 15  and July 22 ( 3 sessions)

Basic and intermediate techniques for mold making and slip casting. Student will learn to make two or three-part plaster molds for slip casting from hand built forms or from found objects.

The price includes material (plaster, porcelain slip and glazes).

Firings Fee: 5 cents per cubic inch (that includes bisque and glaze firing).

Techniques and Concepts for Ceramic Sculpture

Price : $300
Hours : Wednesday 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Starts on September 06 - October 11 (6 sessions)
Plus 12 sessions open studio on Tuesdays 7:00pm - 9:30pm & Saturdays 11:00am-2:00pm

The price includes clay, glazes and 6 sessions of open studio for practice on Wednesdays from 5pm-9pm.

Class Description:

This class will explore the broad field of ceramic sculpture. Students will be taught hand-building techniques including coiling, working with hard and soft slabs, carving, and using sprig molds. Surface decoration techniques will be taught using glaze and underglaze. Technical demonstrations will be based in conceptual inquires that explore the potential meanings of ceramic objects, including notions of functionality, tactility, translation, and absurdity. This will be a workshop style course where we will learn from each others’ experimentation and imagination. Students are encouraged to work boldly, and to develop their own unique directions. Basic ceramics experience is helpful, but this class is open to all levels. 

Instructor Bio:

Trevor King is a visual artist working in ceramics and installation. His works grow from personal history and material process to reflection on the movement of time, and the dynamic power of the present.

King received a BFA from Slippery Rock University (2011), a MFA from the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan (2015), and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland (2010). King worked as a Studio Resident Assistant at Touchstone Center for Crafts in 2012 and has been a resident artist at Ox Bow School of Art, and Haystack Mountain School. In 2014, King was awarded an International Institute Fellowship to work under British sculptor Antony Gormley. In 2015, King’s work was awarded an Outstanding Student Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center. King is currently a Studio Technician at Greenwich House Pottery in New York, NY.

All-Level Wheel Throwing and Hand Building Classes (Tuesday Evenings)

Plus 8 sessions open studio on Wednesdays

This is an all-level adult ceramics class focusing on the basics of wheel throwing and hand building. Students will walk away with a solid understanding of the basic characteristics of clay, form building, and glazing.

The price includes clay, glazes and 8 sessions of open studio for practice on Wednesdays from 5pm-9pm.

About the Instructor: Larisa Daiga is an experimental ceramist and video artist working in New York City. Her creative focus is on process, movement, interaction and pushing the boundaries of ceramics as a material. She has participated in Adhocracy at the New Museum and the Film Room at the British Ceramics Biennial amongst other exhibitions internationally. Larisa Daiga received her Master in Ceramics at Royal College of Art, London, England, UK

Intermediate Wheel Throwing (Saturday Mornings)

Price : $265
Hours : Saturdays 11:00am - 1:30pm
Starts on September 9 - October 14  (six sessions)
Plus 6 sessions open studio on Wednesdays

During this 6-week course, students will learn how to make choices with their work and develop the skills necessary to make pots with additive features such as handles, finials, and lids etc.  Advanced techniques as throwing off the hump, creating closed forms and strategies for throwing large vessels will be covered as well.  The projects given through this class will focus primarily on function and the techniques required for making stronger vessels. The students will learn the key elements to ensure a concrete understanding of the structure and engineering behind technically sound pottery.

Independent Study (for SSNYC alumni only)

Price: $170
4 week period
Hours: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 5:00pm - 9:00pm  Saturdays 11:00am-1:30pm

Students with experience in clay can pursue their own projects outside of a structured class. This program provides access to the facility during the open studio hours.  It is only for SSNYC alumni students.

The price includes studio glazes.
Firings Fee: 5 cents per cubic inch (that includes bisque and glaze firing). *This is a separate charge that is not included in the price of the Independent Study.
