With the aim of learning to build lamps, this advanced workshop will explore the construction of complex (precarious, even) ceramic structures built in parts. Participants will be given instruction on wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, with the option to use whichever they choose in their projects. Some components might be connected before the firing process while others might be built with the intention of later stacking or epoxying them after firing (we don’t judge epoxy, we love it!). Participants will be encouraged to construct complex forms – the use of temporary supports through the construction process can open up a whole new way of thinking about how to achieve ceramic form, and they can be removed after firing to reveal gravity defying results. Participants will also learn how to plan for the integration of lamp hardware (cable, socket, switch, etc.) to produce a seamless final result.
