Nature Finds A Way

Looking at the abundant way shapes and forms from the natural world percolate in artists bodies of work, this exhibition brings together an array of techniques and materials such as Ceramic, Glass and Oil paint to highlight the innumerable new landscape of colors, textures and narratives evolving in Art parallel to the living world.

Dafna Kaffeman

Inspired by nature, the art of Dafna Kaffeman conveys the complexities of life in modern Israel. Kaffeman creates exquisitely crafted plant replicas using flame-worked glass. These botanical specimens reflect the natural world of the artist’s homeland. The glass plants are combined with Hebrew and Arabic words printed or embroidered on soft white fabric, including handkerchiefs which are often associated with Jewish cultural practices of celebration, commemoration, sacrifice, and mourning. Each plant the artist renders in glass has its own cultural and historical meaning.

Xavier Deshoulieres

Intricate webs of colorful line create densely packed and washed out tropical forests that remind us of French artists long connection to the natural world; Douanier Rousseau more naive jungles being one of many examples.

Creating a more abstracted representation where pattern has free reign and using a retro-painting technique his shapes and forms appear slowly through the canvas. Generating a slow revelation of their intricate DNA.

Shiyuan Xu

Guided by the research of scientific and microscopic phenomena ranging from single-celled organisms in the ocean to diverse plant seeds on land, and to cells, the building blocks of all life forms. Shiyuan Xu highlights shapes, patterns, structures and textures of these microorganisms simulated in her creation. She reinterprets these visual elements into sculptural forms revealing the intricacy and fragility of the hidden world.

SSNYC Curatorial Program is dedicated to promoting contemporary visual art focusing on the research and exploration of three dimensional work with an emphasis towards ceramics.  Sculpture Space NYC's mission is to stimulate creativity, new ideas and collaboration in ceramics-based investigations.
