Sculpture Space NYC is pleased to present Lincoln Mayne Solo Exhibition "RaRa DaDa”.

LINCOLN MAYNE: RaRa DaDa

September 8th - October -7th
Opening Reception: Friday September 8th 6:00 - 8:00pm

Sculpture Space NYC, is pleased to announce the forthcoming exhibition ‘RaRa DaDa’ by Lincoln Mayne, a Los Angeles-based ceramicist and sculptor, and the artist’s first solo exhibition.

In “RaRa DaDa,” Lincoln Mayne positions traditional ceramic forms within sculptural frameworks, elevating the consideration of common objects such as chairs, baseball bats, and ping pong paddles into surprising, heightened, formal arrangements.

Throughout the exhibition, Mayne, inspired by Dada’s core tenets, the rejection of logic, and the embrace of the absurd, makes visible his interest in how simple actions, spur profound shifts in otherwise common experiences. Through awareness of materials, explored over a 25-year career, such as ceramics, wood, and ready-made’s, the artist choreographs a dance between the boorish and the whimsical to poetically communicate something new. Inviting the viewer for a romping tour through the unexpected.

Forming the origins of ‘RaRa Dada’ is Mayne’s dedicated interest in ceramics as an historical and ancient medium. His works manifest undercurrents of social conditions, such as in Bread and Circuses (2023) [pictured above], which nods gently toward the roles of spectacle and entertainment as historical diversions. Mayne’s practice is underpinned by an embrace of humor, and considers the position of the artist as akin to that of the court jester.

“The court jester plays an important role in society, they are able to be both honest and mocking without repercussions, they serve as messengers, and they can raise the spirits of a community

with song and story. The court jester gets a pass where others do not, often in a dangerous place, like mocking society. One might consider humor to be serious stuff.

For Mayne, however, it’s the viewer’s task to complete the work. His practice is one of understatement, ambiguity, and open association towards the medium of ceramics itself. From the exhibition’s title, “RaRa” is an Australian slang term that refers to a dismissal of an idea or story, which the artist playfully considers within the notion of Dada irrationality and the familiar-yet dissociative nature of his works.
